All over the country Green Party councillors are improving their local communities with new ideas and a fresh perspective. In places like Huddersfield, Oxford and Norwich action on climate change, public transport, safe streets and protection for our green spaces are being put top of the agenda. Thursday’s elections are the last chance to effect the make-up of Broxtowe council for the next four years. We are urging voters to put a Green voice on the council this May and bring new ideas to our local community.

The Evening Post has a report on the Broxtowe local elections hustings which took place last Thursday in the Rylands. Plenty of lively debate on local issues including the cuts, tram, car parking, Square redevelopment and the local economy.

Local election hustings

There is a local elections hustings taking place tomorrow evening (14th) at the New Venture Social club in Beeston Rylands. This has been organised by the Nottingham Evening Post and will include representatives from all four main political parties. Paul Anderson, candidate for Beeston West, will represent the Green Party.

The event is open to the public and free. So why not bring along your questions and quiz your future councillors?

Green stall in Beeston

There will be another local elections stall in Beeston on Saturday 16th at 10.30am. Members of the Party will be handing out elections leaflets and generally chatting to the public at the Ten Bell statue, just by Sainsbury. We’ll be there through the morning so why not stop by and say hello?

Beeston West – Paul Anderson and Gordon Stoner

Beeston North – Sylvia Rule

Beeston Central – Mary Venning

Brinsley – Beth Hewis

Chilwell West – Richard Eddleston

Stapleford South West – Sarah Camplin

Green Party activists will be out and about in the next month campaigning to put Green voices on our local council. The election takes place on Thursday 5th May.

Broxtowe would be even more marginal under AV

New research by the New Economics Foundation shows that Broxtowe would become an even more marginal seat under the Alternative Vote (AV) system. This means voters in Broxtowe would effectively have more ‘power’ because the final decision is so close and people’s 2nd preferences would be important.

On 5th May there is a referendum on whether to keep the current first-past-the-post voting system or switch to the AV system. The Green Party is urging voters in Broxtowe to vote ‘YES’ in this referendum.

Stall in Beeston

Members of Broxtowe Green Party held a successful stall in Beeston on Saturday to mark the launch of the 2011 local election campaign.

Local voters stopped by to discuss the Party’s opposition to public sector cuts, NHS changes and the continuing war in Afghanistan. There was also the opportunity to find out more about the forthcoming AV voting referendum.
